Onward & Upward: Lathrop Gage’s Bolstering of LA Office, Intellectual Property Practice Continues with Two More Additions

10/16/2018

Firm Welcomes Desmond Jui and Guy Rodgers to Team

Los Angeles (Oct. 16, 2018) – Lathrop Gage is pleased to announce the additions of Intellectual Property attorneys S. Desmond Jui and Guy M. Rodgers to its Los Angeles office. Jui joins as Of Counsel and Rodgers as an Associate, following on the heels of the firm’s recent additions of IP Litigation Partners Andrew Choung and Erica Van Loon, who helm the firm’s burgeoning west coast Intellectual Property Litigation practice. As with Choung and Van Loon, Jui and Rodgers also come to Lathrop Gage from the Intellectual Property department of Glaser Weil LLP.

“The addition of Desmond and Guy further emphasizes our commitment to our Los Angeles office and our Intellectual Property practice,” said Cameron Garrison, Managing Partner of Lathrop Gage. “We welcome them to our firm and look forward to making strategic additions to our rapidly growing team in Los Angeles, as well as our nationwide team of IP practitioners.”

“Desmond and Guy deepen the already strong IP bench at the firm and locally,” said Nancy Sher Cohen, Partner in Charge of Lathrop Gage’s Los Angeles office. “We are delighted they are joining us.”

Just this summer, Choung, Jui and Rodgers made headlines together by winning a $400 million verdict at a patent trial representing client KAIST IP US LLC on behalf of Glaser Weil. “Desmond and Guy were part of the core trial team on site, day-in and day-out, at the trial,” said Andrew Choung. “They were a critical part of our successful formula. I am excited that we will get to continue our work together as a team.”

Desmond Jui brings a great deal of experience litigating patent infringement and invalidity matters before U.S. district courts, the Federal Court and the U.S. Patent and Trademark office. He also possesses unique insight from the other side of the bench, as a former judicial clerk for the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of California, and the Los Angeles Superior Court.

Jui received his Juris Doctor from the University of Notre Dame in 2008 Notre Dame, and his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University, in Baltimore, Maryland in 2001.

Guy Rodgers’ multifaceted background including science, technology and the law makes him an asset for clients seeking intellectual property counsel. Rodgers has focused the whole of his legal career working out of the Los Angeles area and in the field of intellectual property, primarily handling litigation matters of all types, but he is also well-adept at advising on trademark, copyright and similar intellectual property issues. He has helped businesses and inventors prosecute their patent applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for a wide range of products including computer software and hardware, electrical and mechanical systems, agricultural and chemical products, marine and aerospace systems, telecommunications and cryptocurrencies. Prior to his time at Glass Weil, Rodgers worked as a patent attorney for a Los Angeles-based intellectual property boutique firm and as Director of Legal Affairs for chemical manufacturer and distributor Argo Chemical Inc.

Rodgers received his Juris Doctor from the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Law, 2014, and his B.S., with honors, in Cognitive Science, from the University of California, Los Angeles, 2011, where he served as President of the UCLA Fencing Club and Treasurer of the Golden Key International Honour Society. Before, during and after undergraduate school, Rodgers worked for Argo Chemical, first as an IT technician and then in IT management, as a programmer and network administrator.

The strategic buildup of the firm’s Los Angeles office began in October 2017 when Lathrop Gage added Nancy Sher Cohen, Partner in Charge of the Los Angeles office and Insurance Recovery and Counseling Practice team leader, and Partner Ron Valenzuela from Proskauer Rose LLP. In March 2018, Lathrop Gage added Partner Alexandra Roje from Latham Watkins to the Insurance and Recovery Counseling team, and in June 2018, Scheidemantle Law Group combined with Lathrop Gage’s Los Angeles office, bringing Partner David Scheidemantle and Of Counsel Joshua Pollack and Caroline A.H. Sayers. Most recently, Andrew Choung and Erica Van Loon joined the office in September.
