Lathrop Gage Welcomes Alan W. Steele, M.D., Ph.D. to IP Practice

BOSTON (May 18, 2015) – Lathrop Gage today announced that Alan W. Steele, M.D., Ph.D. has joined its Intellectual Property Practice group as Of Counsel in Boston.

“Alan’s knowledge and extensive medical background will add further depth to our biotech and life science practices,” said Giulio DeConti, Chair of Lathrop Gage’s Intellectual Property Division. “We are excited to have him join our team; he will play an important role in helping our clients develop their IP strategy and protect their biotech and pharmaceutical innovations.”

Formerly with Foley Hoag, LLP, Dr. Steele brings more than a dozen years of experience in intellectual property law. He focuses his practice on the preparation and prosecution of domestic and foreign patent applications in the fields of biotechnology, immunology, chemistry, nucleic acids, antibodies, pharmaceuticals, vaccines, therapeutics, molecular diagnostics and medical devices. In addition to counseling clients in a variety of industries, including hospitals and academic institutions, start-up companies, well-established small companies and large pharmaceutical companies, Steele is a co-inventor on a number of U.S. and foreign patents.

Prior to practicing law, Steele practiced medicine as an academic internist for thirteen years and was board certified in internal medicine and nephrology. He is a former assistant professor of medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Steele’s addition to the Boston office brings the total number of attorneys to 14 with an additional 10 Patent Agents and Technical Specialists. Steele received his juris doctor from Suffolk University Law School, his medical doctorate from Boston University School of Medicine, and his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.
