Dr. Kakoli Mitra Joins Lathrop Gage’s Boston Office, Intellectual Property Team
Lathrop Gage is pleased to welcome Of Counsel Kakoli Mitra, Ph.D., to the firm’s Boston office, joining the Intellectual Property Transactions team. Dr. Mitra will primarily aide clients in the Agribusiness and Biotechnology & Life Sciences industries, bringing more than 20 years combined experience in scientific research and law.
Dr. Mitra previously worked as an independent practitioner advising academic-industrial consortiums and startup companies on comprehensive business plans encompassing intellectual property development and multi-million-dollar capitalization and fundraising strategies. She is also the founder of the Sramani Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to leveraging innovation to improve human and ecological health through establishing multi-sector innovator networks comprising diverse entrepreneurships and technologies. Early in her legal career, Dr. Mitra worked in prominent law firms including AmLaw 100 firm Milbank LLP.
Dr. Mitra received her Juris Doctor from The George Washington University Law School in Washington, DC, during which time she was on the Editorial Staff of the American Intellectual Property Law Association’s AIPLA Quarterly Journal and received a National Geographic award for promoting sustainable economic growth through innovation.
Prior to law school, Dr. Mitra was a scientific researcher and innovator at several world-class research institutions including the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Yale University. For her paradigm-shifting research published in the most highly cited peer-reviewed journals, such as Nature and Molecular Cell, she received the prestigious Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award in the Biomedical Sciences for excellence in innovation and leadership and for advancing interdisciplinary science and research. Dr. Mitra received her Ph.D. and M.Phil., from Yale University’s Department of Cell Biology in New Haven, Connecticut. She received her B.Sc. Honors from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, B.C., Canada. As a Governor General’s Medalist at UBC she received multiple accolades and scholarships, including being on the Dean’s Honor List and being awarded Natural Science & Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Awards for undergraduate research and doctoral research, an honor given to the most excellent Ph.D. candidates in Canada.
