Utility Companies Targeted by EPA’s Proposed National Emission Standards

On March 16, 2011, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) unveiled new mercury and air toxics standards for power plants in one of the most expensive rules in the history of the agency. The cost of the proposal would be at least $10 billion according to government estimates, which industry experts believe represents only a fraction of the cost to comply annually.

Industries Affected and Potential Impact

Facilities affected by this National Emissions Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) would include approximately 1,350 coal- and oil-fired electric utility steam-generating units at 525 power plants. Natural gas power plants would not be subject to the rule. Read more ...
