Lincoln Bandlow a Featured Speaker at Annual NATPE Conference, Inaugural World’s Fair Use Day
Lathrop & Gage attorney Lincoln Bandlow (Business Litigation - Los Angeles) will be a featured speaker in industry-leading national conferences next month.
On January 12, Mr. Bandlow will speak at the Newseum, 555 Pennsylvania Ave., NW., in Washington, D.C., as part of Public Knowledge's first World’s Fair Use Day. The event will be an all-day celebration of the doctrine of fair use: the legal right that allows innovators and creators to make particular uses of copyrighted materials without permission of the copyright holder. Mr. Bandlow's morning panel will be titled, "Emerging Media: Commentary, Criticism and the New Publishing Paradigm," in which industry experts will discuss how the changing media landscape will impact news, politics and commentary. Author David Bollier will moderate, while Mr. Bandlow, Washington Post reporter Ian Shapira, TechDirt and Floor 64 founder and CEO Mike Masnick, American University Center for Social Media Director Pat Aufderheide, and Ben Huh, founder of the Cheezburger Network, will be the featured speakers.
Rep. Mike Doyle (D-PA) will be the keynote speaker for World's Fair Use Day, followed by panels dealing with fair use in the arts, emerging media and technology, as well as a question-and-answer session. Other panels will include Andrew McLaughlin, Deputy Chief Technology Officer, who will provide the Obama Administration’s perspective, Dan Reetz, creator and steward of the DIY Book Scanner project, and other media experts. Public Knowledge is a Washington, D.C.-based public interest group working to defend citizens' rights in the emerging digital culture. The day-long event will highlight new and innovative uses of existing content; provide the perspectives of artists, policymakers, academics and business innovators; and teach you how fair use can enrich your creative work.
On January 25, Mr. Bandlow will be a panel speaker for the presentation "Lights, Camera, Lawsuit! Season 8," which will address how television producers can keep their content out of the courts and on the air, as part of the 2010 National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE) Market & Conference in Las Vegas. He will be speaking along with Jamie Lichtman, SVP, Litigation and Policy, NBC Universal Television Group. Emily Caron of AXIS Pro Insurance will moderate the conversation about how lawsuits for libel, slander, invasion of privacy, commercial misappropriation, copyright infringement and misappropriation of ideas abound. The panelists will share their tips and advice on how to avoid and limit media liability claims against producers, distributors and content buyers. They will also touch upon fair use, clearance issues for music, talent and trademarks as well as protecting your intellectual and literary properties, copyright registration and distribution agreements.
The annual NATPE Conference & Exhibition is the only American program market serving the worldwide television community. This three-day market and conference is recognized throughout the world as a key media event. The NATPE is dedicated through its programming and services to keeping members of the television programming industry apprised of the changes occurring in the global media environment, and implements its mission by providing members with education, networking, professional enhancement and technological guidance through year-round activities and events.
Mr. Bandlow is frequently invited to share his expertise with audiences relevant to the entertainment and media arenas, as he has litigated and tried cases in state and federal court matters involving claims for copyright infringement, defamation, right of publicity, right of privacy, trademark infringement and related claims. In addition to practicing law, Lincoln has been an Adjunct Professor at the Annenberg School of Journalism at the University of Southern California since the Spring of 1995, teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in Media and Entertainment Law.
