American Bar Association Appoints Lathrop Gage Attorneys to Leadership Positions


KANSAS CITY, Mo. (July 14, 2011) – Lathrop Gage attorneys Joan K. Archer (Intellectual Property – Kansas City) and Carole Handler (Intellectual Property – Los Angeles) have been appointed to leadership positions by the American Bar Association. Archer has been selected by the incoming chair of the Section of Litigation to serve as co-chair of the ABA’s Pretrial Practice and Discovery Committee. Handler has been appointed to the Publications Advisory Board for the Section of Antitrust Law. Additionally, Handler was selected to serve as vice-chair of the Visual Arts and Dramatic Works Committee for the Copyright Division of the Section of Intellectual Property Law.

The Section of Litigation is the largest specialty section of the ABA, and the Pretrial Practice and Discovery Committee is among the largest in the section. The committee serves to keep members up-to-date on legislative proposals, rule changes and recent court decisions, providing information, analysis and advice for all aspects of pretrial and discovery practice.

The Section of Antitrust Law is a leading professional organization for antitrust and competition law, trade regulation, consumer protection and economics. The Publications Advisory Board provides oversight of articles of benefit to members dealing with antitrust and competition issues. For the Section of Intellectual Property Law, the Visual Arts and Dramatic Works Committee covers copyright and related legal issues in the creation, exploitation and protection of works of art including two-dimensional and three-dimensional works of fine, graphic and applied art; photographs; dramatic works including plays and pantomimes; and other works.

Archer concentrates her practice in intellectual property litigation and counseling, business litigation and product liability litigation. She has been named one of the “Top 50 Women Attorneys in Missouri and Kansas” by Super Lawyers, and has an “AV” rating from Martindale-Hubbell. Archer has been named “Best of the Bar” in intellectual property by the Kansas City Business Journal since 2009. She previously served as co-chair of the ABA’s Expert Witness Committee for the Section of Litigation.

Handler concentrates her practice in intellectual property, copyrights, intellectual property litigation, trademarks and antitrust. She has been named one of the “Top Women Litigators in California” by Daily Journal Extra every year since 1999. She has received a Martindale-Hubbell “AV” rating, and has been selected for The Best Lawyers in America and Super Lawyers. She previously served as the chair of the Copyright Litigation Committee for the Copyright Division of the Section of Intellectual Property.
