Losing any important lawyer from the firm can result in the most dreaded transition of all — loss of clients.

“Those in the business will tell you ‘I’ve got control of my clients, and everything is good,’” said Ben Keller, a partner at Lathrop Gage.

But if you ask lawyers if they’re nervous about what could happen if a partner leaves and if they think clients would drop the firm, “I think they’d say, ‘Yes,’” Keller said.

Adding to the tension is a debate in the legal community over who is more important to the firm, he said, the attorney who brings in clients or the one who does the work. Read more ...
