Bush Signs Anti-Genetic Discrimination Bill

On May 21, President Bush signed into law an anti-discrimination measure that prevents employers and health insurance companies from discriminating against or refusing coverage to individuals based on the results of genetic testing.
Broadly embraced in Congress with overwhelming bipartisan support, the bill forbids employers and insurance companies from denying employment, promotions or health coverage to people when genetic tests show they are prone to certain costly diseases, such as cancer, heart disease or other ailments. The new law prohibits health insurance companies from using genetic data to set premiums or determine enrollment eligibility. Read more ...
