Jarica L. Oeltjen

As a native of Lockwood, Missouri, Jarica Oeltjen learned at an early age that hard work, compassion, and creativity are the keys to success. She studied at Missouri State University for her undergraduate degree and then went on to graduate No. 1 in her law school class from the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville.

With an emphasis on helping nonprofit organizations in litigation matters, Jarica uses her skills to protect clients’ interests and to communicate clearly and effectively with clients and her trial team about each case she handles.

Jarica regularly serves as local counsel to large, multinational businesses defending litigation in Missouri. Her insight about the area and her familiarity with Missouri courts makes her a particularly valuable asset to clients. She was recently a part of a trial team that defended a manufacturer in a products-liability suit involving allegations of chemical exposure. Her assistance with research and briefing on various pre-trial matters helped the client reach a very favorable settlement on the eve of trial.

In addition to her nonprofit litigation work and serving as local counsel, Jarica works with a wide range of clients to navigate various types of disputes, such as breach-of-contract matters, personal-injury claims, property-damage claims, probate litigation, and professional-liability matters.

She has worked with dozens of clients on complex litigation matters and has helped them work through the complicated web of discovery issues involving electronically stored information (ESI) in both state and federal courts.  She has extensive experience with both taking and defending depositions, representing clients at mediations, and attending hearings to present her clients’ positions. Also, she has played an active role in jury selection, direct examination of witnesses, and cross-examination of witnesses in jury trials.

Representative Experience

  • First chaired a jury trial on a probate matter and obtained the desired result for the client.
  • Negotiated a favorable pre-litigation settlement for a telecommunications client, saving the client thousands of dollars in litigation expenses and other costs.
  • Obtained summary judgment in favor of a public entity sued by a general contractor for breach of contract.
  • Successfully defended a personal-injury case to jury verdict.
  • Achieved early dismissal of a title company in a boundary-dispute case based on an aggressive approach during the discovery phase of the case.
  • Obtained a dismissal in federal court on behalf of a healthcare entity sued under the False Claims Act.

Jarica spends most of her free time with her beautiful family. Her interests include cooking, baking, biking, painting, and spending time at her family’s multi-generational farm in southwest Missouri.
