Missouri Supreme Court justice Price will resign

Missouri Supreme Court Justice William Ray Price Jr. will resign Aug. 1.

In a letter Monday to Chief Justice Richard Teitelman, Price said he intends to return to private practice. He said he’s retiring now in part because he wanted to have his replacement picked using Missouri’s nonpartisan court plan.

The plan, which calls for selection panels instead of elections for appellate courts and courts in the St. Louis and Kansas City area, could be scaled back by a ballot initiative in November. Conservative legislators who passed the measure said the nonpartisan court plan gives lawyers on the nomination panels too much influence.

Price practiced in Kansas City from 1978 to 1992 with the Lathrop Norquist firm, a predecessor of Lathrop & Gage LLP. Read more ...
